Container Architecture To Solve Egypts Social-Housing Crisis

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The most urgent of Egypts urbanization problems has been the shortage of social housing (low-income housing). As 500,000 social-housing units need to be built every year for five years to keep up the expanding population in Egypt (2%per year) . But , the government didnt deliver the required number as the government has committed that 300,000 units will be delivered by the end of 2016 . However according to the first plan in the beginning of 2014 , 1.5 million units should be delivered in the end of 2016. And thats because the traditional construction method takes a lot of time & high cost especially after devaluation of the Egyptian pound. So, the problem is inflating every year & as a result the slums increases [1] . Millions of shipping containers are consumed in the world & they are used for carrying goods in ships for ten years before being scraped . shipping containers are time & cost-effective, strong structure & eco-friendly. By reusing shipping containers as residential spaces instead of the traditional construction method , mostly the social-housing crisis in Egypt will be solved . As 500,000 unit will be built in the year , while the traditional one delivered 150,000 units approximately per year. Keywords: Social-housing , container , Cost & Time
